Why fear a fear?

“Be not afraid of anything. The moment you fear, you are nobody. It is fear that is the great cause of misery in the world. It is the fear that is the greatest of all superstition. It is fear that is the cause of our woes, and it is fearlessness that brings heaven even in a moment. Therefore, ‘Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached”  - Swami Vivekananda

This saying of Swami Vivekananda, was running around in my mind since many days. why can’t we make a short film on the topic of fear? But fear of what? There are many types of phobias. Fear of failure, fear of insecurity, fear of some people, fear of many things and sometimes fear of nothing!! We wanted to pick up some good concept as our first project. Then why not a short film on fear of FEAR?

It all started when Guru, Amar and myself were on a trip to Tirupathi a famous pilgrimage centre of south India. As we had a handy-cam with us, we thought of making best use of the location and started filming there itself even though we didn’t had any bound script nor we had prior preparations or planning (Sounds crazy isn’t it?!!J). But we did shoot! Guru took the role of acting; Amar did all the support work where in I took the responsibility of cinematography. Overall it was a gud experience but the end result was poor. There were many missing scenes as there was no script. It was impossible to edit and the possibility of re-shoot was remote as we had to go back to Tirupathi :) !

We had decided to re-shoot the movie on the same concept in Bangalore only when Vishwanath joined us in early Jan 2010 and took the ownership of production management. By2coffeefilms activities were only at planning stage till then and there was no real work happening over a year. We wanted to gear up with the action.

Film was shot at Amar’s house on 26th January 2010. He was very busy in preparing for a flight as he had to leave for China on office assignment the same night. His wife Archana took care of urgent things that was required on the spot and of course food arrangements for the entire crew :) !!

Chidu took the responsibility of assistance direction, Vishwanath on lights and I took the responsibility of cinematography and direction. Film was shot in one day in and around Dollars colony. We took around 1 week for editing and sound mixing. Even this time around we dint have good screenplay but it wasn’t such a problem as we had a rehearsal already ;) We titled the movie ‘Devil Inside You’.

Overall it was a very good experience and we felt we worked as a professional team. We made a retrospective to identify our mistakes in pre/post productions and in filming on location. We did find many areas of improvements and adopted them in our next projects.

Though S.O.S was our first experimental shot at handling the camera and editing, I cannot even say it was our serious attempt at movie-making! So, in all true sense, DIU was our first, sincere and immature attempt at short film making. So I request you to watch it and provide us your honest feedback which will help us to evolve as short-film makers!!
